Reflections 225 to 238
225/ Reflection of Within

“If we learn to open our hearts, anyone, including the people who drive us crazy, can be our teacher.” Pema Chödrön
One child of God is the only teacher sufficiently worthy to teach another. (ACIM, T-7.VII.7:1)

Lesson 225. God is my Father, and His Son loves Him (ACIM, W-225). Yesterday: The lesson stated that our Identity is so powerful and so glorious that even “Heaven looks to It to give it light”. This line is heartening, especially since we take so much notice of the limited and sometimes damning thoughts that make us feel so small. Everyone’s purpose in life is to be huge. Today: This lesson is both an appeal to God and an appeal from Jesus. It took me a while to work this out as I read through the lesson because I was feeling distracted - a bit of early-morning lethargy - but I must have had a word with myself and got there in the end.
Think carefully how you would look upon the giver of this gift for as you look on him so will the gift itself appear to be. As he is seen as either the giver of guilt or of salvation, so will his offering be seen and so received. The crucified give pain because they are in pain. But the redeemed give joy because they have been healed of pain. (ACIM, T-19.IV-D.20:1-4)
The giver of the gift is our brother - anyone, masculine, feminine or neuter, who happens to be beside us or of whom we are thinking.
The gift is what we want - as we give, so we receive.
And guilt is pain while salvation is endless love and boundless joy - regardless of whether we are being slapped on the cheek or patted on the head.
We are responsible for all of our reactions and responses. We can feel love or hate, or somewhere in between. Even in the midst of outer turmoil, we can feel the peace within.
A Course in Miracles therefore leads us to the light - except, really, it’s a journey to nowhere. As the veil is removed, clarity simply returns.
Everything is just an inner state of mind. Everyone is always a reflection of how we feel within.

“It does not matter how slowly you go as long as you do not stop.” Confucius.
The universe of love does not stop because you do not see it, nor have your closed eyes lost the ability to see. (ACIM, T-11.I.5:10)

Lesson 226. My home awaits me. I will hasten there (ACIM, W-226). Yesterday: The lesson reminded me that all of our final few steps will end a journey that has never begun. God hasn’t gone anywhere and neither have we. It was my wife’s birthday yesterday and we went out in the evening to listen to a classical guitarist. It was proof of how to be really in the moment and also an exquisite example of perfect love. Today: This lesson was such a beautiful meditation. It basically tells us that if we see the world as a state of mind, and if we know the world can give us nothing, then we are home. No need to go to Australia - Heaven is right here.
Your chosen home is on the other side, beyond the veil. It has been carefully prepared for you, and it is ready to receive you now. You will not see it with the body’s eyes. Yet all you need you have. Your home has called to you since time began, nor have you ever failed entirely to hear. You heard, but knew not how to look, nor where. And now you know. (ACIM, T-20.II.8:1-7)
A Course in Miracles tells us quite clearly that our chosen home is Heaven. It is deep within us, meaning that we don’t have to travel anywhere. We just have to become still.
There is no fear in love. Fear can only fall away as stillness takes over. Love is the stillness in which the Voice for God can be heard.
To reach that stillness, we need to be peaceful with our thoughts. They won’t go away and neither do we need to fight with them. We simply want to wait patiently because patience is the key.
Behind every thought, there is an awareness. The awareness does nothing and quietly observes.
Between every thought is also an opening. The opening is an invitation to join with the one Mind.
In front, below or outside - it doesn’t matter. The one Mind is both within and without. And, since we are that one Mind and It is us, wherever our thoughts are taking us can make no difference at all.

Lesson 227. This is my holy instant of release (ACIM, W-227). Yesterday: I judged two of my cousins when I met them for the first time in years - one positively and one negatively; I judged myself for the feelings I had during a meal; I judged myself later for how exhausted I felt; and I am judging myself now for even writing this. The ego loves drama and will eke it out until its dying breath. Today: The holy instant of release - the theme of this lesson - is beyond thought. Even though a wave of caffeine was making my first meditation a bit speedy, it was still a pleasure to sit with the lesson purely because it reminded me of my purpose. And my purpose is to be aware of what is now and of what has nothing to do with a constant steam of thoughts.
A simple question yet remains, and needs an answer. Do you like what you have made? – a world of murder and attack, through which you thread your timid way through constant dangers, alone and frightened, hoping at most that death will wait a little longer before it overtakes you and you disappear. You made this up. It is a picture of what you think you are; of how you see yourself. (ACIM, T-20.III.4:1-4)
Everything, then, that we know about ourselves, if it isn’t wholly peaceful, is a fabrication. It is a total illusion that we have made up.
We have also made up a god that can appease this self-made story, and who can us punish us as well if this is required. And it is all because we are living in fear of being bad.
And it is this fear that has to be kept buried. It is just too painful to live with and, when it does rise, we sedate it to keep it hidden. It is like a mini death, with our final demise lurking in the shadows.
A Course in Miracles brings us back to the present moment. It tells us that we are not the body and we are not our fears. The only thing that it requires from us is some gentle laughter.
Our gentle laughter is the reminder not to take anything too seriously, just as ‘sin’ is a few strokes of ink on a page. The joke is always on us and that is why we need to be free of a mind full of illusions.

Lesson 228. God has condemned me not. No more do I (ACIM, W-228). Yesterday: The lesson was a reminder that our will acts as a veil to the holy Will of God and I was thinking about this throughout the day. I was two legs and two arms moving about, but life is nothing to do with being busy and earning money. It is about our spiritual welfare and loving others. Today: We are away for a few days to celebrate my wife’s birthday which was last Saturday. Where we are staying is barely bigger than a rabbit hutch but it is secluded, set back from the coastal path and within hearing distance of the waves crashing below. This lesson is about self-condemnation, which is really related to being contained within a body. The body is hard to escape but we can still listen intently and hear the truth.
There is no fear in perfect love because it knows no sin, and it must look on others as on itself. Looking with charity within, what can it fear without? The innocent see safety, and the pure in heart see God within His Son, and look unto the Son to lead them to the Father. And where else would they go but where they will to be? (ACIM, T-20.III.11:3-6)
There is the ego and the Holy Spirit. Each can only see itself and neither can see the other.
The ego might be aware of aspects of the Holy Spirit. For example, soldiers might have the innocence beaten out of them but it might be perceived in those who are in need of their help.
A Course in Miracles is the reminder that only the guilty could make decisions based on the feelings of the ego. War is a product of the mind and it is because of war that the ego thrives.
The Holy Spirit can never see the ego in anyone. The Holy Spirit knows of no fault or division that needs defending. War, then, becomes a simple mistake in the mind that gently needs correction.
We are not the illusion of peace; we are the peace. We are not the war in the mind; we are the purity and joy. The war is merely a distortion of truth and so, by definition, we just have to withdraw the cause (which is always fear) and allow it to be replaced by the Holy Spirit’s endless peace.

229/ God only Loves

“All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.” J.R.R. Tolkien.
Time is your friend, if you leave it to the Holy Spirit to use. He needs but very little to restore God’s whole power to you. (ACIM, T-15.I.15:1-2)
***
Lesson 229. Love, which created me, is what I am (ACIM, W-229). Yesterday: The sea is gorgeous to look at but it is even better to get into, especially when freezing cold and safe. Cold water cleanses the mind and leaves me with a sense of euphoria and energy. Any anticipation and doubt is dulled and the mind becomes much more focused on what is joyful. Today: In the Text, it mentions “the granite block of sin”. Having just read this, I am starting to understand that this is how we view the physical form. The lesson also reminds me that love is what we are. This means that, if I can look past the body, then I can sense what I really am.
Sin has no place in Heaven, where its results are alien and can no more enter than can their source. And therein lies your need to see your brother sinless. In him is Heaven. See sin in him instead, and Heaven is lost to you. But see him as he is, and what is yours shines from him to you. Your savior gives you only love, but what you would receive of him is up to you. (ACIM, T-20.IV.2:1-6)
A Course in Miracles tells us that salvation is the reawakening of the laws of God in the minds of those who have established other laws.
Salvation is all about giving. As we give, so we receive.
We give love, then we receive love and the laws of God relate only to this. These laws are natural and unifying. Whatever does not result in love has nothing to do with God and thus cannot be real.
Unreality is of the ego. It is self-made and thoroughly benign. The ego has taken on a life of its own but the reality is that it is nothing more than a thought of fear.
The thought of fear has drawn up laws that reinforce our feelings of separation - and punishment is a big one. And this is why we need forgiveness; it is to revoke the laws that prevent our inner peace.
The ego hates but God only loves. Salvation means the memory of that love is returned to the mind.

230/ Timelessness Heals

“Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.” Carl Jung.
The Holy Spirit uses logic as easily and as well as does the ego, except that His conclusions are not insane. (ACIM, T-14.in.1:4)

Lesson 230. Now will I seek and find the peace of God (ACIM, W-230). Yesterday: The lesson was a reminder that love created us (as the one Son of God) and that love is what we are (an extension of God’s Love). I did get a sense of being connected to love whilst having an early morning swim in the sea but I felt less connected when I couldn’t swim in the evening (the waves were crashing). Love (as an ego) is variable to say the least. Today: This lesson precedes a page in the Workbook that defines salvation. It tells us that God put the Thought of peace into the mind as soon as the Son of God had a thought of separation. Eight billion of us therefore have the chance to remember God’s peace, and it was exactly what I was trying to achieve in my meditation.
In this world, God’s Son comes closest to himself in a holy relationship. There he begins to find the certainty his Father has in him. And there he finds his function of restoring his Father’s laws to what was held outside them, and finding what was lost. Only in time can anything be lost, and never lost forever. (ACIM, T-20.V.1:1-4)
Time, then, is the great illusion. We either use it to awaken or we use it to stay asleep.
Reality is found only now. There is nothing within this present moment that is not perfect. Love is what we are and nothing that uses time can ever heal or be healed.
Jesus, then, has given us A Course in Miracles in order to relieve the effects of time.
Timelessness heals and the reality is that suffering always stops when we find the present moment.
Erin Michelle Galito channels Jesus in the video below. Jesus tells us that there is only love and there is only now. It is in this very instant that we have access to the miracle and it is in stillness that the miracle can be found. Peace is with us always and everything else is just a mirage that veils the truth.

231/ Optical Illusion

“Awakening is not changing who you are, but discarding who you are not.” Deepak Chopra.
However, when he awakens, the light is correctly perceived as the release from the dream, which is then no longer accorded reality. (ACIM, T-2.I.4:7)

Lesson 231. Father, I will but to remember You (ACIM, W-231). Yesterday: The lesson was all about seeking and finding the peace of God, the reason being that whatever happens to us in the external world is always a mirror of the world within. Yesterday, I didn’t feel happy about a sequence of texts from someone who is asking for a donation but I did get it resolved in my mind when I was quiet enough to ask for inner guidance. However, as I awoke earlier, I noticed that the ego was still trying to make a big deal out of it. Today: “To remember Him is Heaven” - for me, this is a great line in this lesson. It sums up the Course and everything that the Workbook is teaching us. When my mind began to wander as I was sitting with the lesson a short while ago, I read that line again and it seemed to be enough to renew my focus.
There is no order in relationships. They either are or not. An unholy relationship is no relationship. It is a state of isolation, which seems to be what it is not. No more than that. The instant that the mad idea of making your relationship with God unholy seemed to be possible, all your relationships were made meaningless. In that unholy instant time was born, and bodies made to house the mad idea and give it the illusion of reality. (ACIM, T-20.VI.8:1-7)
The simplicity of A Course in Miracles is staggering. One tiny mad idea simply spun out of control.
Now, there appears to be both love and fear, and fear is the great illusion. Cut ourselves and we bleed, and it is impossible to deny that being cut isn’t painful.
The idea of separation was the beginning and the end of fear - except now it feels very real. We look outside of ourselves to a physical reality which, again, it feels impossible to disprove.
What we see, however, is just a mirage. It is nothing more than a trick of the mind.
And this means that, as we undo the layers of guilt through forgiveness, the mirage lessens and lessens. We begin to see reality exactly as it is and not as we would wish it to be. Truth is not an optical illusion but a fact, and the only thing that hides it is a thought that has spun out of control.

Only the sane can look on stark insanity and raving madness with pity and compassion, but not with fear. (ACIM, T-19.IV-D.11:2)

Lesson 232. Be in my mind, my Father, through the day (ACIM, W-232). Yesterday: The Workbook is all about learning to think with the Holy Spirit; in the Text, the ego is compared to a tiny mouse trying to attack the might of the universe. I felt like that mouse. Thoughts were taking me here and there throughout the day, but they all seemed miniscule against the vastness that is God - tiny blips disappearing into infinite space. Today: This lesson shows us what it is to be awakened, in that we are asking God to be actively present in our minds. As I sat, I could feel how busy my thinking was, and it is busyness that is keeping my mind asleep.
The body is the ego’s idol; the belief in sin made flesh and then projected outward. This produces what seems to be a wall of flesh around the mind, keeping it prisoner in a tiny spot of space and time, beholden unto death, and given but an instant in which to sigh and grieve and die in honor of its master. And this unholy instant seems to be life; an instant of despair, a tiny island of dry sand, bereft of water and set uncertainly upon oblivion. (ACIM, T-20.VI.11:1-3)
We are masters of our own destiny. No one can do it for us.
There are many paths to the top of the mountain, and many have made the ascent. If we too make the journey, we won’t be stepping into the same footsteps but we will have to follow the same trail.
A Course in Miracles is one way to get to the top of the mountain. It does not claim to be exclusive and, like all spiritual paths, it requires diligence, fortitude and dedication to practice.
We will know from the start if it is the path for us, and it has to be a feeling that never goes away.
Truth always prevails with perseverance, no matter how hard and how daunting it apparently seems.
And the top of the mountain is our awakening. This means the clouds are spread out below, we have vision in all directions and there is only exhilaration at having made the steep ascent.

Lesson 233. I give my life to God to guide today (ACIM, W-233). Yesterday: I didn’t really do this lesson justice. There was a large swathe of time from about ten-ish to three-ish where I just forgot about it; and in the evening, I was running a bit late and kidded myself that I would sit with the lesson just before I went to bed. I did try, but gave up after about seven minutes because I was falling asleep. Today: It is a big ask to do what is being suggested today - to give the day to God. As I sat just now, my mind would venture off and I kept having to bring it back - again and again and again. Welcome to the land of the ego which mulls and plots and fixates.
Vision will come to you at first in glimpses, but they will be enough to show you what is given you who see your brother sinless. Truth is restored to you through your desire, as it was lost to you through your desire for something else. Open the holy place that you closed off by valuing the “something else,” and what was never lost will quietly return. (ACIM, T-20.VIII.1:1-3)
A Course in Miracles tells us that the world is an hallucination - and it needs to do it slowly and methodically simply to prepare the mind for all the shock.
Only sight can see the hallucination as real but it is vision that sees through it. The ego makes it and the Holy Spirit laughs at it.
What we are looking at, then, is entirely within us. The external world is made of our own projected thought patterns and so it is the internal world to which we have to turn.
We have to face all our inner fears - which are exactly what we are projecting onto the external screen of awareness. We have face the wars, the torture and the famines. We have to face everything that is hideous because it is only by doing this that we can walk right through it.
We find that perfect love is on the other side of the hallucination, which never existed anyway. The only conclusion we can make is that only love is real and fear is nothing more than just a farce.

234/ Change or Stay?

“Your sacred place is where you can find yourself over and over again.” Joseph Campbell.
Love holds no grievances. I would wake to my Self by laying all my grievances aside and wakening in Him. (ACIM, W-68.7:5-6)
***
Lesson 234. Father, today I am Your Son again (ACIM, W-234). Yesterday: The lesson was about being guided by God and it was a nice day - swimming in the river and then going for a long walk on the moor. However, in the evening I became a bit indecisive about a job I wanted to do in the garden. It required knocking on my neighbour’s door and I was reluctant to do that. In the end, procrastination won and I don’t believe God was involved. Today: This lesson tells us that nothing has happened. It reminds us that our life as a body is one big illusion. It asks us not to take everything so seriously but to simply regain the memory of God’s infinite Love.
Projection makes perception. The world you see is what you gave it, nothing more than that. But though it is no more than that, it is not less. Therefore, to you it is important. It is the witness to your state of mind, the outside picture of an inward condition. As a man thinketh, so does he perceive. Therefore, seek not to change the world, but choose to change your mind about the world. (ACIM, T-21.in.1:1-7)
A Course in Miracles tells us that, if we damn ourselves, we project that damnation out onto the world; likewise, we do the same with love.
The outside picture is therefore a reflection on an inward condition. Love and hate is all there is.
A Course in Miracles also tells us that only illusion can meet illusion; truth always meets itself. War becomes the condition in which fear is born and peace is the state where only love can abide.
We are all in a humongous dichotomy. Do we want to stay as we are or do we need to change?
If we stay as we are, we suffer. This is the inevitable consequence of believing that we are bodies.
Change requires commitment and application, and the Workbook is the start of this process. Change also has to happen when our choices have dissipated and it feels as if we are running out of time.

235/ Love Is fair
17th June 2025
“Love is the only reality and it is not a mere sentiment. It is the ultimate truth that lies at the heart of creation.” Rabindranath Tagore.
Complexity is not of God. How could it be, when all He knows is one? (ACIM, T-26.III.1:1-2)
***
Lesson 235. God in His mercy wills that I be saved (ACIM, W-235). Yesterday: The lesson was about re-establishing ourselves as what we are (which is the Son of God) and yet I still had to do my yoga practice which resulted in part of my back going ‘ping’ and me going “ouch” (which was simply guilt arising). This meant that the Son of God still thought he was a body but I was diligent with the lesson anyway. Today: This lesson is common sense on a page. We are told that God’s Will for us is perfect happiness and, if we tune into that Thought, then happiness is what we will receive. Why be feeling pain when we can be joyful?
The world you see is but the idle witness that you were right. The witness is insane. You trained it in its testimony, and as it gave it back to you, you listened and convinced yourself that what it saw was true. You did this to yourself. See only this, and you will also see how circular the reasoning on which your “seeing” rests. (ACIM, T-21.II.5:1-5)
The world does not happen by chance. It is not a coincidence that there are wars, famines, disasters and uprisings. The world merely reflects the angst we feel inside.
A Course in Miracles describes us as insane, and the ego is. However, it also tells us that we are the one Son of God. It tells us that this is not insanity but merely the truth.
This might feel shocking to a split mind but, with a bit of effort, we can also know what sanity is. Nothing happens by chance. If the big blue book falls into our lap, then it is there to help us heal.
This is the start of insanity’s reversal. The ego goes from being curious to becoming apoplectic.
And inevitably bombs will explode and lives collapse. Fear is inevitable because change is terrifying.
Becoming scared is a prerequisite for sanity. We have to shift from the madness of a split mind to the inner certainty that just the one mind exists and only love is fair.

236/ Knowing Totality
18th June 2025
“Let what comes come. Let what goes go. Find out what remains.” Ramana Maharshi.
The Holy Spirit teaches thus: There is no hell. Hell is only what the ego has made of the present. (ACIM, T-15.I.7:1-2)
***
Lesson 236. I rule my mind, which I alone must rule (ACIM, W-236). Yesterday: I never really felt that I got to grips with the true meaning behind yesterday’s lesson - “God in His mercy wills that I be saved”. Every hour, I would pause once again to read the words (with concentration) just to make sense of its significance. And it all came back to the simple act of remembering what is beyond the veil of forgetfulness. Today: This lesson tells me that the mind can only serve but only I can rule the mind, and so I tried this out for fifteen minutes - except my timer must have switched itself off. I worked this out when a concern about time began to fill my mind.
Perception is a choice and not a fact. But on this choice depends far more than you may realize as yet. For on the voice you choose to hear, and on the sights you choose to see, depends entirely your whole belief in what you are. Perception is a witness but to this, and never to reality. Yet it can show you the conditions in which awareness of reality is possible, or those where it could never be. (ACIM, T-21.V.1:7-11)
A Course in Miracles reminds us that reality does not need our permission to be itself. It just is. What it does need, however, is our awareness and it needs this fully.
It really is all or nothing; we either know totality completely or we don’t know totality at all.
Projection makes perception. What we perceive outside in the world is being projected from within.
To know totality, then, we want to change the reel on the projector - meaning the mind that thinks.
The key is to become the witness to our thoughts. We don’t need to fight with them or alter them, but we do want to look at them directly (the cause of everything) and not get caught up in the story.
This means totality has no distortion - it is as it is. We then become what we are, which is pure awareness. And the whole world changes because the mind that is thinking it has changed as well.

237/ Helpful Nudges
19th June 2025
“Arise! Awake! And stop not until the goal is reached.” Swami Vivekananda.
Concerns about the body demonstrate how frail and vulnerable is your life; how easily destroyed is what you love. (ACIM, T-27.I.6:10)
***
Lesson 237. Now would I be as God created me (ACIM, W-237). Yesterday: My hourly reminder went off when my employer was a few feet away and was peering at the camellia she wanted me to dig up, but I decided to read the lesson anyway. It was a theme I resonated with, I liked it, and I didn’t want to waste the opportunity. It was about ruling my mind and that was what I was trying to do. Today: A few video clips have come up on YouTube from the film Full Metal Jacket which is a brutal film using the Vietnam war as a backdrop; in the Text, I have just been reading about rising above the battleground. This lesson, then, is a reminder that we have to accept the truth about ourselves. We are not the body and it is the body that would love to fight a war.
The power you have over the Son of God is not a threat to his reality. It but attests to it. Where could his freedom lie but in himself, if he be free already? And who could bind him but himself, if he deny his freedom? God is not mocked; no more His Son can be imprisoned save by his own desire. And it is by his own desire that he is freed. Such is his strength, and not his weakness. (ACIM, T-21.VI.11:1-7)
We are caught up in the world, but we are not of the world.
A Course in Miracles is about regaining our Identity - which means knowing ourselves as the Self that Is, and not as a little self that thinks. It gives us the opportunity to do this with the Workbook.
Application therefore becomes everything but it is also helpful to have a few nudges along the way.
And the near-death experience is that nudge, especially since it deals with a truth we have forgotten.
Dr. Eben Alexander’s near-death experience changed his life forever from one of materialism to one of spirituality. He discovered that our reality is vastly different from the brain/body paradigm. He had always felt that science was the pathway to truth but now sees how truth arises as we awaken.

238/ Illusion of Peace

“Spiritual growth is not like fast food. It takes time for its roots to grow, and that requires us to be receptive and patient.” Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi.
Only the Holy Spirit knows what you need. For He will give you all things that do not block the way to light. (ACIM, T-13.VII.12:1-2)

Lesson 238. On my decision all salvation rests (ACIM, W-238). Yesterday: As I sit here pondering yesterday’s lesson, I am gazing out of the window at a pinkish glow that is spreading over the moor as the sun begins to rise. A flock of distant birds are moving across the skyline and there is something about what I am seeing that has triggered the awe that I am feeling. I am that beauty; I am the wonder that I see in front of me. Today: As I read this lesson, I know I was reading it as my little self - feeling that all salvation rests on Mark. And yet ACIM tells me that Mark does not exist and it is to the Self that this lesson is addressed. The i (or me) plays no part.
Do you not see that all your misery comes from the strange belief that you are powerless? Being helpless is the cost of sin. Helplessness is sin’s condition; the one requirement that it demands to be believed. Only the helpless could believe in it. Enormity has no appeal save to the little. And only those who first believe that they are little could see attraction there. (ACIM, T-21.VII.1:1-6)
A Course in Miracles tells us that elusive happiness, or happiness that changes form and can shift in the blink of an eye to sadness, is an illusion that has no meaning.
True happiness has to be constant, just as infinite love is boundless and can have no opposite.
Powerlessness is only of the body. The ego gets enraged and tries to make the body strong; it seeks acolytes and wealth; the ego needs dominance and support.
To be powerful, we are merely asked to contact the peace within our minds. That peace, too, is never changing. It is a peace that has to be touched by an inner stillness and a gentle focus.
We learn this through forgiveness. It’s an undoing of all the noise that blocks out the silence.
The responsibility is therefore always ours. It’s a simple choice for peace or for the illusion of peace.
