Reflections 85 to 98
85/ Perception of Life

“You don’t get to choose how you’re going to die, or when. You can only decide how you’re going to live. Now.” Joan Baez.
God knows you now. He remembers nothing, having always known you exactly as He knows you now. (ACIM, T-15.V.9:1-2)

Lesson 85. Review of lessons 69 and 70 (ACIM, W-85). Yesterday: The theme of the review was love creating like itself and love not holding grievances, although I never felt I really made it stick. On the surface, I might look like I have things under control, but beneath the surface I am like a duck paddling against the current. My thoughts are all over the place and I often feel I’m battling with their will. Today: The first lesson of the review was about grievances… and I had a few. It began with practising the wrong lesson - I must not have moved the book mark - and feeling completely stupid. And so I practised for another fifteen minutes and developed a grievance about running out of time. On the positive side, I have started to focus my attention between the eyebrows and it seems to draw me into a sense of peace.
To know is to be certain. Uncertainty means that you do not know. Knowledge is power because it is certain, and certainty is strength. Perception is temporary. As an attribute of the belief in space and time, it is subject to either fear or love. (ACIM, T-3.III.1:3-7)
Only a split mind can perceive and, as stated above, it is subject to both fear and love.
This is awful. It is hell. It has absolutely nothing to do with the beingness that is our natural state. We are the light within the mind - we are an unending and infinite love that has no opposite.
This state of beingness can’t be known by a mind that perceives. It can’t be known by a body. To describe Heaven is beyond words because words arise through the body. Words are either scribbles on paper or sounds out of mouths. Words are merely symbols that point to something much greater.
All uncertainty about what we are stems from fear, and fear results in feeling lost and scared.
A Course in Miracles points us in the direction of a healed mind, but only if we want it enough. By practising the lessons of the Workbook, our perception changes and we begin to see that life is fair. If we don't do this, then our perception is that life is out to get us and this is the fundamental error.

Lesson 86. Review of lessons 71 and 72 (ACIM, W-86). Yesterday: When reading the second part of the review last night, it surprised me to find that salvation comes from within. I know salvation isn’t the whim of some benevolent deity but, to me, it just seems to be ‘out there’. By coming from within me, salvation now seems to be the by-product of an endlessly open mind. Today: As I was sitting with this morning’s theme (only God’s plan for salvation will work), I was aware that I again have a slight resistance to the term ‘salvation’, perhaps still associating it with redemption and sin. Also, I noticed that my thoughts became like machine gun fire and kept drawing me away from the purpose of the lesson. The ego was having a mind-attack.
A Course in Miracles has one purpose. It is to give us the practical tools in order to remove the blocks to love’s presence. That is why we have the Workbook and 365 lessons.
At the moment, we are perceiving pain’s presence. We are looking at life through the lens of the ego and the mind is distorting reality. The fact is, the mind is dreaming and the ego is the principle player in this dream.
To wake up from the dream requires a healthy dose of perseverance and determination. We need commitment and resolve. We also need to be guided because we could never do it alone.
And this is why, two thousand years later, Jesus is again teaching us through A Course in Miracles.
In the passage below, Jesus is really telling us that the awakened mind doesn’t need to ‘do’ anything but just has to be. And this beingness is what shines whenever any mind steps away from the ego and reclaim its connection with the Holy Spirit.
I was a man who remembered spirit and its knowledge. As a man I did not attempt to counteract error with knowledge, but to correct error from the bottom up. I demonstrated both the powerlessness of the body and the power of the mind. By uniting my will with that of my Creator, I naturally remembered spirit and its real purpose. (ACIM, T-3.IV.7:3-6)

If a mind perceives without love, it perceives an empty shell and is unaware of the spirit within. (ACIM, T-1.IV.2:9)

Lesson 87. Review of lessons 73 and 74 (ACIM, W-87). Yesterday: I have committed to doing the practice in the best way I can, which is currently fifteen minutes in the morning and evening, and then whenever I remember during the day. Over the years, my dreams (which are thoughts) have been pretty intense and imprisonment has been a theme that has shaped a lot of those dreams. This has receded over the past few years which suggests the effect of my thinking is changing. Today: It took a few readings of the instructions to make sense of the first lesson in the review which asks us to ‘will’ the light (essentially we are being asked to perceive truly). At one point during my practice a few minutes ago, I was thinking about the death of a body (this was odd and quite bizarre) and it suggests that the emphasis of my practice was more on the darkness than on the light.
How beautiful indeed are the Thoughts of God who live in His light! Your worth is beyond perception because it is beyond doubt. Do not perceive yourself in different lights. Know yourself in the One Light where the miracle that is you is perfectly clear. (ACIM, T-3.V.10:6-9)
We all have good days and bad days. The sun comes up and a day is born, and the sun goes down and the day ends. Life can appear to be beginnings and endings, but the real time is always now.
A Course in Miracles would tell us that everything happens within the mind. The universe - the sun, the moon and the stars - all arise from within. Nothing exists outside of the mind because the external is just a projection of what’s happening internally.
This, of course, is insanity for the ego’s thinking. Good days and bad days are just part of life, as is the world and the universe. We have a body and a brain that works within its own set of constraints.
A Course in Miracles is all about undoing the thought system that shapes the ego. ACIM is complete non-duality and not at all concerned with beginnings and endings. There is only the oneness of love.
When we break free of the cycle of life and death, then we break free of insanity. We still witness the external but we live in the internal, and life becomes wondrous, not a loop of despair.

***
Lesson 88. Review of lessons 75 and 76 (ACIM, W-88). Yesterday: Here’s a brief summary of what I learned yesterday. All thoughts are concepts and my identity is just a bunch of thoughts as well. Who I am - the person writing these words - really does not exist. Light is the real truth of what I am and my thoughts are nothing more than the cloud cover I need to move through in order to get to the light. Today: This morning’s review states that the light has come. Each day, we have been given prompts in order to help us with the understanding of the lesson we were working with. As I was practising earlier, I found it helpful to use the prompt that suggested choosing a significant figure in my life in order to see the light in that person. This is the first time that I have really concentrated on one of these prompts and it made me think that relationship is what ACIM is all about.
Judgment is symbolic because beyond perception there is no judgment. When the Bible says “Judge not that ye be not judged,” it means that if you judge the reality of others you will be unable to avoid judging your own. (ACIM, T-3.VI.1:3-4)
How we see others is how we see ourselves. This is a key teaching within A Course in Miracles.
Perception and knowledge are complete opposites. Perception is what the mind does when it thinks there is an object; knowledge is the subject and fully comprehends its connection to God. God is love as we are love, and only Heaven can be a state of perfect oneness.
Knowledge is not the goal of A Course in Miracles. All the Course wants us to do is to see the real world, which is a world of love, peace and devotion. We don’t see this now because the mind is split, and it is this split in the mind that needs to be healed.
As we progress with our healing, we pay less attention to the body. This doesn’t mean we ignore the body but it does mean its importance is lessened. Bodies are always separate but minds are joined.
Through relationship, we learn to love unconditionally. This is the way God Is and the way that we, as His Son, should be. God loves and we extend that love; as we give love, then we also receive.

Lesson 89. Review of lessons 77 and 78 (ACIM, W-89). Yesterday: I was having an afternoon walk on the moor and was letting my mind wander as I am inclined to do when my foot suddenly slipped and I landed flat on my back in a puddle. It became instantly clear that I should me more careful with my thinking, in that our thoughts are powerful and can potentially hurt us. Meanwhile, earlier in the day, I had been listening to Cate Grieves on YouTube and she had set a task for her group which was to let go of all judgement for a week. I have now set that goal for myself. Today: The review today tells us that we are entitled to miracles because behind every grievance is the miracle. And so this is what I’ve been practising for the past fifteen minutes - observing the ego at work, trying not to judge, dropping all attachment to my thoughts and allowing the miracle to simply be.
It is a mistake to believe that a thought system based on lies is weak. Nothing made by a child of God is without power. It is essential to realize this, because otherwise you will be unable to escape from the prison you have made. (ACIM, T-3.VII.1:6-8)
The mind is incredibly powerful, which means that we reap what we sow. Thoughts are sent out and behind each one is a little ripple that has an effect.
What A Course in Miracles wants to do is to make us fully aware of the power of our thoughts. It doesn’t want us to fight fire with fire but merely to step aside and observe our thinking. It want us to be present enough so that our thoughts don’t manifest into unnecessary actions.
Guilt is the source of all illogical thinking and it is always guilt that established the world that we see. Without guilt, we would have no ego and, without the ego, there is only love.
The ego is fear. Forgiveness allows us to witness that fear without backing away. And what this does is allow both clarity and peace to expand within the mind.
Peace and love arises naturally within a mind that is free of fear. Freedom is illumination but instead we choose to imprison ourselves in darkness and have shut ourselves away.

90/ Life Is One

“A flower does not think of competing to the flower next to it. It just blooms.” Zenkei Shibayama.
Its selflessness is Self, and this it sees in every meeting, where it gladly joins with every Son of God whose purity it recognises that it shares with him. (ACIM, S-1.V.2:6)

Lesson 90. Review of lessons 79 and 80 (ACIM, W-90). Yesterday: I enjoyed the day. In the morning I had a couple of pleasant gardening jobs and in the afternoon we had a nice long walk. The weather was crisp and bright and delightful, and it was as if miracles embraced us (the theme of the review). If any grievance did arise (which hide the miracle) then it disappeared very quickly. Today: I have been trying to let go of judgement, but this means not judging something that is ‘good’ as well as what I consider ‘bad’. I had something good happen just now and it seemed like a miracle. It’s dark and cold outside and so, in many ways, it’s very pleasant for the miracle to arise and light up the day.
The journey to the cross should be the last “useless journey.” Do not dwell upon it, but dismiss it as accomplished. If you can accept it as your last useless journey, you are also free to join my resurrection. Until you do so your life is indeed wasted. (ACIM, T-4.in.3:1-4)
Jesus is being very direct in the quote above. What he is saying is that only the resurrection is important. He is telling us that life is eternal and has nothing to do with death and dying.
We only live one life. We might have a belief in reincarnation but ultimately there is just the one life that extends and extends. Jesus is not expecting any of us to undergo a crucifixion but he does state that this is what the ego does to our minds day after day.
The ‘one’ life is always about expansion and extension. Since love is all there is, then love is all we are. A Course in Miracles is here to teach us about life, in that it is reminding us that we are dreaming of crucifixion and we need to stop. It is the gentle hand that supports us as we awake.
Erin Michelle Galito channels Jesus in the video below. Jesus tells us that awakening is not based on time because time does not exist. We learn about the Self as opposed to the little self with which we identify. We also find that our beingness is simply a state of awareness that requires a quiet mind.

91/ One Single Light
24th January 2025
“The past has no power over the present moment.” Eckhart Tolle.
The Christ as revealed to you now has no past, for He is changeless, and in His changelessness lies your release. (ACIM, T-13.VI.3:2)
***
Lesson 91. Miracles are seen in light (ACIM, W-91). Yesterday: This was the last day of the current review and the theme was all about one problem and one solution. The ‘problem’ is any grievance that we might have and the ‘solution’ is always the miracle. The day was quite satisfying simply because of the lessons’ simplicity - I was essentially being taught that nothing is wrong because everything is right. Today: Have just sat with this lesson (miracles are seen in light) for fifteen minutes and found it helpful. When I got to the part where I ask “who am I?” I could get a real sense of joining with something much bigger. Since the lesson is instructing me that I am not the body, I was having to trust in the non-physical and this felt good.
You believe that if you allow no change to enter into your ego you will find peace. This profound confusion is possible only if you maintain that the same thought system can stand on two foundations. Nothing can reach spirit from the ego, and nothing can reach the ego from spirit. (ACIM, T-4.I.2:4-6)
Illusions cannot stand before the truth. It is impossible, just as a tiny snowflake can only melt in the warmth of the sun. Truth is everywhere and all thought collapses in front of truth’s presence.
A thought of separation binds us to form. One single thought made the body, established the world and cut the mind off from boundless love.
A Course in Miracles identifies this thought as the ego. It is a thought of fear. It is therefore fear that blocks love’s presence but, as we remove it, love comes rushing in to fill the space with light.
The practice of forgiveness simply means we bring all of our darkness to the light. It is the same as saying we bring pain to peace, or hell to heaven. We bring the thought of illusion to the to the Thought of Truth and wait as the light of day replaces the dark of night.
Truth is knowledge. Truth knows everything and all there is. It is merely fantasy to think a single thought of fear could ever put out the One single Light.

Lesson 92. Miracles are seen in light, and light and strength are one (ACIM, W-92). Yesterday: We were asked to repeat the lesson throughout the day and it was easy to forget when I was talking to someone or doing some work. And then, just after lunch, I suddenly remembered I was meant to do an extended practice in the middle of the day. I had fifteen minutes to spare and began by feeling rather resentful. At the end, though, I felt both relieved and happy. Today: Twenty minutes for the morning meditation suddenly seemed like a long time. Bodily needs were getting in the way but the instructions for the lesson were clear. Miracles are seen beyond the darkness of the body; miracles are seen in light, which is formless and has nothing to do with frustrations and urges.
Your worth is not established by teaching or learning. Your worth is established by God. As long as you dispute this everything you do will be fearful, particularly any situation that lends itself to the belief in superiority and inferiority. (ACIM, T-4.I.7:1-3)
A Course in Miracles really wants us to know how powerful we are. This power has nothing to do with control or wealth or physical form. It has everything to do with an inner knowing and inherent intuition.
Deep within the mind, there is absolute certainty. It is proof of what we are and where we are right now. It could be named as our Self, without any form or misplaced identity, and it could be seen as the brightest light shining as a single star.
We have to encourage quietness within the mind to hear its sound. It’s as if an inner Voice is murmuring lovingly to us from behind deeply embedded barriers that are all totally self-inflicted.
These barriers to love’s presence can be passed through as easily as passing through the clouds and into the boundless sky. What is within us is eternal and present and is simply the light of the mind.
The light of the mind is calling us home just as the ocean might welcome a tiny drop of water. And when anything reconnects with its wholeness, its essence just extends and expands.

93/ We Made an Error
26th January 2025
“If you can change your mind, you can change your life.” William James.
God does not change His Mind about you, for He is not uncertain of Himself. (ACIM, T-10.in.3:1)
***
Lesson 93. Light and joy and peace abide in me (ACIM, W-93). Yesterday: The lesson stated that light and strength are one (which is much the same as today’s lesson) and this is the miracle. I tried to repeat the lesson as often as I could throughout the day, and even thought about doing a third meditation in the afternoon, but the day won. Time is always important to the ego. Today: Have just read through the lesson and it makes perfect sense. We do beat ourselves up constantly but God always sees us as we really are. However, five minutes every hour does seem a daunting prospect for the day. I have set the timer on my phone and will see how it goes.
God is not the author of fear. You are. You have chosen to create unlike Him, and have therefore made fear for yourself. You are not at peace because you are not fulfilling your function. God gave you a very lofty function that you are not meeting. (ACIM, T-4.I.9:1-5)
And this is why we find A Course in Miracles.
- It is to get back to the Beginning, where all is One.
- It is to realise that we are not the body. The body is limited and we are limitless.
- It is to fully understand that nothing happened. We are the Kingdom of Heaven.
The lesson today tells us that God guarantees our sinlessness. All we have to do is to try and replicate this.
Everywhere we go, we should ask ourselves what would God have us do? How can we love?
And we don’t have to forgive ourselves for anything. We just have to realise that we made an error and it is as simple as that.

“People reveal themselves completely only when they are thrown out of the customary conditions of their life.” Leonardo da Vinci.
You always choose between your weakness and the strength of Christ in you. (ACIM, T-31.VIII.2:3)

Lesson 94. I am as God created me (ACIM, W-94). Yesterday: A five-minute practice every hour did seem daunting at first but I only had two hiccups; the first was when I didn’t set my timer at 10am (I had a one-hour class at 9am and assumed I would remember at the end, but didn’t), and the second was when my wife got irritated when the timer went off at 1pm. I still practised for five minutes but I didn’t practise forgiving her. Today: “I am as God created me” is a nice simple practice. I have just been reading in the Text how God knows when His channels are not open. He is aware of our pain. This is an extra incentive for me to practise this lesson properly.
Everyone makes an ego or a self for himself, which is subject to enormous variation because of its instability. He also makes an ego for everyone else he perceives, which is equally variable. Their interaction is a process that alters both, because they were not made by or with the Unalterable. (ACIM, T-4.II.2:1-3)
In relation to the passage above, Jesus then goes on to say that just the thought of another ego is as effective in changing relative perception as is physical interaction. He is telling us that we are creators in our own right and what we think is immensely powerful.
And then, shock horror, Jesus also reminds us that this is a great example of how the ego is simply an idea and not a fact. This really strikes back at our own inflated sense of self.
As we cut through the dross of habitual thinking, we come to crux of the matter. There is just the one Self. The Self is uniformly whole and has nothing to do with a name, address and telephone number. It has everything to do with a mind that is whole.
Only a split mind can think of separate identities and only thinking can establish pain. By witnessing our thoughts, we step away from its source which is always the ego.
The ego warns of dire consequences if we ever question it. Jesus, however, only asks us to step aside from the ego and suspend all judgement. The mind then becomes healed and peace is a fact.

95/ Being of Truth

“Once you replace negative thoughts with positive ones, you’ll start having positive results.” Willie Nelson.
Everything you perceive is a witness to the thought system you want to be true. (ACIM, T-11.V.18:3)

Lesson 95. I am one Self, united with my Creator (ACIM, W-95). Yesterday: It was helpful to use the timer on my phone for the exercises. Sometimes it would go off totally unexpectedly, startling me in the midst of whatever I was doing and I would allow myself stop for a few minutes. Also, earlier in the day, I squeezed in a session before teaching a class. However, at the end, I again forgot to practise until the following hour. Today: There are clear instructions in today’s lesson as to why we are doing these hourly five-minute practices, stating that to not do so is only a mistake but it’s important not to consolidate the mistake. The theme is knowing that we are all the “one Self” and clearly repetition is crucial because wholeness is way too abstract for the ego to consider.
In the ego’s language, “to have” and “to be” are different, but they are identical to the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit knows that you both have everything and are everything. (ACIM, T-4.III.9:4-5)
A Course in Miracles is very clear. There is no distinction between having the Kingdom of God and being the Kingdom of God. We are the Kingdom of God.
The Kingdom of Heaven is within us. We are the Kingdom of Heaven. The only way to recognise this is to not be hoodwinked by the noise of the mind and to find the peace inside.
To step into the peaceful present moment becomes our practice. We achieve this through forgiveness because only forgiveness proves to the mind that nothing has happened.
The ego is our sense that something terrible has occurred. It is a deep fear that we have to keep buried with endless distractions. But really the ego is an illusion and just a trick of the mind.
Within us all is a deep knowing. We know exactly what we are, who we are and where we belong.
We are God’s Son, residing with God in Heaven. We are the Self that has no opposite. We are simply a being of truth that knows we are one.

96/ Second Coming
29th January 2025
“Be faithful in small things because it is in them that your strength lies.” Mother Teresa.
If a mind perceives without love, it perceives an empty shell and is unaware of the spirit within. (ACIM, T-1.IV.2:9)
***
Lesson 96. Salvation comes from my one Self (ACIM, W-96). Yesterday: I find that practising in the morning feels more fluid than practising in the evening; in the morning, I feel a strong motivation whereas in the evening I have more resistance. During the day, I feel a bit in between and yesterday I felt motivated to send the lesson to other people (as in “we are one Self”). After all, ACIM is all about relationship. Today: The instructions are conclusive. They tell us that the mind and body cannot both exist. If we are physical, then the mind has disappeared in favour of a self-concept; if we are spirit, then the body has become meaningless. Clearly, I believe in the concept of the body. My back feels stiff which suggests I am favouring the physical by dwelling on what’s past.
The First Coming of Christ is merely another name for the creation, for Christ is the Son of God. The Second Coming of Christ means nothing more than the end of the ego’s rule and the healing of the mind. I was created like you in the First, and I have called you to join with me in the Second. (ACIM, T-4.IV.10:1-3)
A Course in Miracles wants us to know that we don’t have to look to the future. We are perfect as we are. Perfection can only be found in the present moment and this is actually the Second Coming.
The Second Coming is therefore the realisation that we needn’t suffer. There is a way out. This doesn’t require any denial but only a recognition. The Second Coming is all about being present to what is and letting go of that which is not.
We therefore need to look into the mind to find the light; this requires persistence and patience.
It is in the light that we find the presence of creation; creation is unbounded and goes on and on.
We then get the proof that we are without any limits; we are nothing whatever to do with the body.
And the Second Coming dispels both form and division; it is the full awareness of oneness within.

97/ Canvas of Love

He lives within you in the quiet present, and waits for you to leave the past behind and enter into the world He holds out to you in love. (ACIM, T-13.VII.5:9)

Lesson 97. I am spirit (ACIM, W-97). Yesterday: I had some work in the morning which required putting up a wicker fence along a bank with the owner watching me. It didn’t seem appropriate to stop for five minutes and contemplate the lesson (although occasionally I would furtively look at the notes I had written). The rest of the day was less intense. Today: I enjoy reading a bit of the Text before each lesson and the Text absolutely complements the Workbook. I have just been reading how our perception of others influences how we feel about ourselves - if we see others as spirit, then the mind knows it is spirit. It is always good to read about this again.
I do not attack your ego. I do work with your higher mind, the home of the Holy Spirit, whether you are asleep or awake, just as your ego does with your lower mind, which is its home. I am your vigilance in this, because you are too confused to recognize your own hope. (ACIM, T-4.IV.11:1-3)
Jesus is letting us know that everything happens within the mind.
It is within the mind that we know peace and find complete truth. However, because the mind is split, then we also have the ego and this scares us to death (both literally and metaphorically).
A Course in Miracles therefore gives us the Workbook as a way of healing the mind. It negates the ego so that we learn to listen and see the bigger picture. This is how we find our purpose in life.
And the near-death experience also endorses our purpose. It shows us that we are not here for gain but really just to see the Self in others. We want to add to the whole instead of taking away from it.
The video below is a compilation of near-death experiences in which the experiencer meets Jesus. Jesus is seen as a friend, confidant and the epitome of peace. His appearance is really to show us all why we are here. In a way, we should all add to the bigger picture by painting the canvas with love.

98/ Minds are Light
31st January 2025
“It’s not your job to like me - it’s mine.” Byron Katie.
The Name of God’s Son is one, and you are enjoined to do the works of love because we share this Oneness. (ACIM, T-8.IX.7:3)
***
Lesson 98. I will accept my part in God’s plan for salvation (ACIM, W-98). Yesterday: I had three words to remember (“I am Spirit”) and all was fine until 9am when I started work and then everything was completely forgotten. I got home just after midday and felt guilty, which the ego loved. After that, the timer on my phone kept startling me into practising and, once or twice, I delayed the practice until I finished off what I was doing. As I write this, I wouldn’t give myself many marks out of ten. Today: The lesson reminds me that, since time has no meaning, we are simply exchanging nothing for everything. To have everything is salvation. I felt excited when I read this but have just had to go back to lesson to read it again. I suppose my own forgetfulness mirrors how easy it is to forget our reality as the light of the world.
The body is the ego’s home by its own election. It is the only identification with which the ego feels safe, since the body’s vulnerability is its own best argument that you cannot be of God. This is the belief that the ego sponsors eagerly. (ACIM, T-4.V.4:1-3)
We need to be very careful about spiritual bypassing. We don’t want to sidestep or avoid anything. We have to look at the ego directly and see it for what it is.
The ego is just a thought, no more than that. The mind, however, clearly feels it’s more than that or else we wouldn’t be here. We believe what we think and we react accordingly.
A Course in Miracles bring clarity to the mind and directs us lovingly towards the light. The ego is our inner darkness and is actually extreme suffering, even if it appears that it will always give us what we want. The ego is about dealing with limitations when we are forgetting that we are limitless.
It is crucial not to run from the darkness. Instead, we calmly observe the darkness and allow it to transmute into light. By being spiritually authentic, we become the truth of what we are.
The Holy Spirit is the help we need and our inner Guide. The Holy Spirit doesn’t want us to deny that we are the body but It does want to show us that all minds are light.
